Occupational Medicine / Work Cover
Occupational Medicine / Work Cover at BayMed Medical Centre & Skin Cancer Clinic
Work can be physical, fast-paced, desk-bound or anything in between—and when health issues arise, they can affect both your job and your life at home. At BayMed Medical Centre & Skin Cancer Clinic in Cheltenham, our GPs provide occupational medicine and WorkCover support for workers and employers, with a focus on safe, practical return-to-work outcomes.
We see workers from Cheltenham, Mentone, Highett, Moorabbin, Hampton, Sandringham, Beaumaris and the wider Bayside and south-east Melbourne areas, as well as people who travel from across Victoria for WorkCover and occupational health assessments at our Cheltenham clinic.
What Is Occupational Medicine?
Occupational medicine looks at the way your job and your health interact—how work can contribute to injury or illness, and how health issues can affect your capacity to work safely.
At BayMed, this may include:
- Assessment and management of work-related injuries
- WorkCover certificates and ongoing reviews
- Planning safe and staged return-to-work
- Pre-employment and employment-related medical assessments
- Workplace vaccination advice (e.g. flu, certain occupational risks)
- Support for workers with chronic or pre-existing conditions in the workplace
Our role is to look after your health while also considering the realistic requirements of your job.
WorkCover & Work-Related Injuries
If you’re injured at work or become unwell due to your work environment, your BayMed GP can
- Take a detailed history of how the injury or illness occurred
- Examine the affected area (for example, back, shoulder, knee, hand, respiratory or skin issues)
- Arrange investigations such as X-rays, ultrasounds or blood tests where appropriate
- Provide initial and ongoing WorkCover medical certificates
- Develop a treatment plan, including medication, physiotherapy or other allied health referrals if needed
We also communicate with your employer, insurer and other providers (with your consent) to help keep everyone aligned on your treatment and capacity.
Return-to-Work Planning
Safe return-to-work is a key part of recovery. At BayMed, your GP can work with you, your employer and your WorkCover case manager to:
- Define what tasks you can and cannot safely perform
- Set graduated duties or hours (for example, light duties, reduced lifting, shorter shifts)
- Adjust the plan over time as your condition improves
- Provide updated certificates that accurately reflect your current capacity
The goal is to balance recovery with realistic work expectations—moving forward without risking further injury.
Pre-Employment & Workplace Medicals
Certain industries and roles carry specific health risks—for example:
- Healthcare and aged care
- Childcare and education
- Some community or customer-facing roles
- Roles with higher exposure to respiratory illnesses or blood/body fluids
Our GPs can advise on appropriate work-related vaccinations (such as influenza and other recommended vaccines under current guidelines), and provide general advice on preventing illness at work—hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and other simple measures.
Supporting Workers with Existing Health Conditions
If you already live with a chronic health condition—like diabetes, heart disease, asthma, chronic pain or mental health concerns—work can sometimes make symptoms harder to manage.
Your BayMed GP can:
- Review how your job duties interact with your condition
- Adjust medications or treatment timing to better fit work patterns (for example, shift work)
- Provide letters or reports suggesting reasonable adjustments at work where appropriate
- Coordinate care with specialists, allied health and your employer (with your consent)
The aim is to help you remain in work safely where possible, rather than leaving health and employment to clash.
What to Expect at an Occupational Medicine / WorkCover Appointment
A typical occupational or WorkCover visit at BayMed may include:
- History & Job Details
We ask what you do for work, how long you’ve been doing it, and how the injury or illness developed. - Examination
Your GP examines the affected area or system (for example, musculoskeletal, respiratory, skin) and checks for signs of strain, injury or work-related illness. - Diagnosis & Plan
We discuss the likely diagnosis, outline treatment options, and decide on any tests or referrals. - Certificates & Documentation
Where WorkCover is involved, we complete medical certificates and any necessary documentation. For pre-employment or occupational medicals, we complete the requested forms or reports. - Follow-up & Review
We arrange review appointments to track progress, update certificates and adjust return-to-work plans over time.
When to Book an Occupational Medicine / WorkCover Appointment
It may be time to book at BayMed if:
- You’ve had a work-related injury or illness and need assessment or WorkCover certificates

- You’re struggling to perform your usual duties safely due to a health issue
