Why Have a Skin Cancer Check?

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and many melanomas and non-melanoma skin cancers start as small changes that are easy to miss at home. A regular skin cancer check at BayMed gives your doctor the chance to examine your moles, spots and sun-damaged areas closely, compare changes over time and treat concerning lesions before they become a bigger problem.

Who Is a Skin Cancer Check For?

A skin cancer check is recommended if you:

  • Have fair skin, a history of sunburns or work outdoors
  • Have many moles or freckles, especially if they are irregular
  • Have a personal or family history of melanoma or other skin cancers
  • Notice a new spot, or a mole that is changing in size, shape or colour
  • Simply want peace of mind about your skin

If you’re unsure how often you should be seen, our skin cancer doctors can recommend an interval based on your risk and previous results.

What to Expect at Your BayMed Skin Cancer Check

A standard skin cancer check at BayMed usually includes:

  1. History and risk review – Your doctor asks about your medical history, medications, past sun exposure and any moles or spots you’re worried about.
  2. Full-body skin examination – You will be asked to undress to your underwear so we can examine most of your skin, including the scalp, back, arms, legs and soles of the feet.
  3. Digital dermoscopy and mole imaging – Any suspicious or complex lesions are examined with a dermatoscope and, if needed, photographed for future comparison (mole mapping / total body photography where appropriate).
  4. Clear explanation and plan – Your doctor explains what they’ve found, whether any spots need monitoring, biopsy or removal, and when you should return for your next skin check.

If a lesion requires a biopsy or removal, this is usually arranged for a separate appointment in our treatment room.

Skin Cancer Services at BayMed

At BayMed Medical Centre & Skin Cancer Clinic, our skin cancer services include:

  • Skin Checks & Screening – Full-body or targeted skin examinations to review moles, sunspots and other lesions.
  • Digital Dermoscopy & Mole Mapping – High-magnification imaging to assess and track moles over time.
Total Body Photography & Surveillance – Photo records for patients with many moles or higher risk, helping us spot new or changing lesions earlier.
  • Spot / Single Lesion Checks – Shorter visits for one or two specific areas of concern.
  • Procedures & Skin Surgery (Biopsy, Excision, Grafts) – Minor skin surgery under local anaesthetic, with pathology for accurate diagnosis.
  • Non-surgical Treatments (Cryotherapy, Electrodesiccation) – Treatment options for certain sun-damaged or precancerous lesions without the need for traditional surgery.
  • High-Risk / Recall Program – Structured follow-up and reminders for patients at higher risk of skin cancer, so regular skin checks become routine.

These services are designed to support early detection, practical treatment and ongoing surveillance in a single Cheltenham skin cancer clinic.

How Often Do I Need a Skin Cancer Check?

Most people benefit from a skin cancer check every 12–24 months, depending on their risk factors and previous history. Patients with a personal or strong family history of skin cancer, many atypical moles or significant sun exposure may need more frequent checks. At your appointment, your doctor will recommend how often you should return and, if appropriate, offer to add you to our recall system

Signs You Should Book a Skin Check Sooner

Even if your next review is not due, please book an earlier skin cancer check at BayMed if you notice:

  • A new mole or spot that looks different from your other marks
  • A mole that is changing in size, shape, edge or colour
  • A lesion that is itchy, bleeding, crusting or not healing
  • A new pigmented streak under a nail

If you’re worried about a specific spot, you can request a single lesion / spot check with one of our skin cancer doctors.
