GP Mental Health Care Plans & Referrals

Anxiety & Panic

Anxiety can show up as constant worrying, racing thoughts, physical tension, heart racing, stomach issues or trouble relaxing. Your BayMed GP can:

  • Explore triggers and patterns
  • Check for physical contributors (thyroid, medications, substances, sleep)
  • Discuss therapy options and, where appropriate, medications
  • Plan how to respond when symptoms are building vs when they’re mild

Depression & Low Mood

Depression is more than “feeling sad”—it can include loss of interest, low energy, poor sleep, changes in appetite, difficulty concentrating and feelings of worthlessness. We can:

  • Assess the severity of your symptoms
  • Check for contributing factors such as pain, chronic illness or medications
  • Create a treatment approach that may include lifestyle strategies, talking therapies and/or medication
  • Arrange follow-up to see how you’re tracking over time

Stress, Burnout & Work/Study Pressure

Workload, study demands, family responsibilities and financial stress can build up slowly. Your GP can:

  • Help you make sense of what’s happening and how it’s affecting your health
  • Suggest practical steps to reduce or manage stress where possible
  • Discuss sleep routines, energy patterns and coping strategies
  • Support you with certificates, letters or referrals if needed (for example, workplace adjustments or psychology support)

Sleep Problems

Poor sleep can worsen anxiety, mood, focus and physical health. We can:

  • Explore your sleep habits and environment
  • Check for conditions like insomnia, restless legs or possible sleep apnoea
  • Suggest practical steps to improve sleep and, where necessary, arrange further tests or referrals

What to Expect at a Mental Health Appointment

A mental health appointment at BayMed usually includes:

  1. Space to talk
Your GP will ask what has been happening, how long you’ve felt this way, and how it’s affecting your life. You can go at your own pace.
  2. Gentle assessment
We may ask questions about mood, anxiety, sleep, appetite, concentration, substance use and thoughts of self-harm, to understand the full picture.
  3. Checking physical factors
Sometimes physical health problems can contribute to mental health symptoms. We might check your blood pressure, do a brief examination or order blood tests.
  4. Plan and next steps
Together, we’ll agree on a starting plan—this may include lifestyle changes, counselling/psychology, medication, a mental health care plan, or a follow-up appointment to see how things are going.

You don’t need to have the “right words” or a perfectly clear story before you come in—just being honest about how you’re feeling is enough.

Safety & Urgent Concerns

If you ever feel at risk of harming yourself or others, or you’re very distressed:

  • Seek urgent help via emergency services or the nearest emergency department
  • Use crisis support services available 24/7 in your area
  • Let us know so we can help arrange appropriate follow-up and support

Routine GP appointments are important, but they’re not a substitute for immediate emergency care when safety is at risk.

When to See Your GP About Mental Health

It may be time to book a Mental Health appointment at BayMed if:

  • You’ve felt anxious, low, hopeless or on edge most days for more than a couple of weeks
  • Your sleep, appetite, work or relationships are being affected
  • Friends, family or colleagues are worried about you
  • You’re using alcohol, nicotine or other substances to cope
  • You simply feel “not yourself” and can’t shake it on your own

You don’t have to wait until things are severe before seeking help.
