Spot / Single Lesion Checks
Spot / Single Lesion Checks at BayMed Medical Centre & Skin Cancer Clinic
Sometimes it’s not your whole skin you’re worried about—it’s one particular mole, freckle or spot that doesn’t look right. At BayMed Medical Centre & Skin Cancer Clinic in Cheltenham, we offer spot / single lesion checks for patients who want a focused review of one or two specific areas of concern between their routine skin cancer checks.
We see patients for spot checks from Cheltenham, Mentone, Highett, Moorabbin, Hampton, Sandringham, Beaumaris and the wider Bayside and south-east Melbourne areas, as well as people who travel from across Victoria for mole and skin cancer checks at our Cheltenham clinic.
What Is a Spot / Single Lesion Check?
A spot or single lesion check is a shorter, targeted appointment where your doctor concentrates on one or two specific lesions you are worried about—rather than performing a full-body skin examination.
It’s designed for situations where:
- You’ve noticed a new spot that stands out
- An existing mole has changed in size, shape or colour
- A lesion has become itchy, scaly, crusted or is not healing
- You simply feel uneasy about one particular mark and want it reviewed
Your doctor will let you know if a more complete skin check is also recommended, either at the same visit (if time allows) or at a separate appointment.
When Is a Single Lesion Check Useful?
A spot check can be especially helpful if you:
- Are between regular skin checks but something new has appeared
- Don’t have time for a full skin check that day but don’t want to ignore a changing lesion
- Have been advised to return sooner if a particular mole changes
- Are unsure whether a spot needs monitoring, biopsy or removal
It’s not a replacement for routine, full-body skin cancer checks, but it’s a practical way to get timely advice when one area is worrying you.
What Happens During a Spot / Single Lesion Appointment?
During a spot / single lesion visit at BayMed, your doctor will usually:
- Take a brief history
Ask when you first noticed the lesion, how it has changed, and whether there are any symptoms such as itching, bleeding or pain. - Examine the lesion
Visually assess the spot and surrounding skin, often using a dermatoscope (a magnifying device with polarised light) to look for deeper patterns and features not visible to the naked eye. - Explain their assessment
Discuss whether the lesion looks benign, suspicious or uncertain, and outline the options—such as monitoring, imaging, biopsy or removal. - Plan next steps
If the lesion needs a biopsy or excision, this is usually booked as a separate procedure appointment. Your doctor may also recommend a full skin check at another time, particularly if other risk factors are present.
Possible Outcomes After Your Spot Check
After reviewing the lesion, your doctor might:
- Reassure you that the spot appears benign and does not require treatment
- Suggest photographing or documenting the lesion so it can be compared at a future visit
- Recommend a biopsy or excision if there are features that raise concern
- Propose more regular monitoring through our High-Risk / Recall Program if your overall risk is higher
In each case, you’ll be given clear instructions about what to look out for and when to come back.
When to Book Sooner
You should book a spot / single lesion check as soon as possible if you notice:
- A new mole or spot that looks very different from your other marks
- A lesion that is rapidly changing, especially in adults
- A mole with irregular borders, multiple colours or asymmetry
- A spot that bleeds, crusts, ulcerates or doesn’t heal within a few weeks
If you’re ever unsure whether to wait for your next routine skin check or come in earlier, it’s safer to have the lesion assessed.
