Children’s Health at BayMed

Our GPs look after a wide range of children’s health concerns, including:

  • Newborn and infant checks
  • Growth, feeding and sleep concerns
  • Routine childhood immunisations
  • Coughs, colds, fevers and common infections
  • Asthma and allergy care
  • Eczema and other skin problems
  • Behaviour, learning and development concerns
  • School health checks and forms
  • Adolescent health, including mood, sleep and lifestyle

We aim to create a setting where kids feel as relaxed as possible and parents feel heard.

Childhood Immunisations

Vaccinations are one of the key ways to protect children from serious illnesses. At BayMed, our GPs and nurses:

  • Provide routine childhood immunisations in line with the current Australian schedule
  • Review your child’s vaccination history and catch-up needs if you’ve moved or missed doses
  • Explain which vaccines are due and what they protect against
  • Help parents prepare younger children for the visit and manage common after-effects such as a sore arm or mild fever

If your child is nervous about needles, let us know—we can talk through simple strategies to make the experience easier.

(We follow current national and state guidelines; your GP can discuss specific vaccines and timing during your visit.)

Newborn & Infant Checks

Early visits help us get to know your baby and support you in those first weeks and months. A newborn or infant check may include:

  • Weight, length and head circumference
  • Feeding and settling discussions (breast, bottle or combination)
  • Sleep patterns and safe-sleep guidance
  • Jaundice, rashes and other common early concerns
  • Developmental milestones appropriate for age

We’re also happy to talk about how parents are coping—fatigue, mood and adjustment are all valid parts of the conversation.

Growing Child: Toddlers to Primary School

As children grow, their health needs shift. Your BayMed GP can help with:

  • Ongoing growth and development monitoring
  • Managing common illnesses (ear infections, sore throats, chest infections, tummy bugs)
  • Asthma action plans and allergy management
  • Eczema and other skin conditions
  • Toilet training questions and daytime/night-time wetting
  • Sleep and behaviour concerns

We can also complete school entry checks and forms where required.

Teen & Adolescent Health

Teenagers often have different questions from younger children—sometimes they’ll want part of the consultation on their own. Our GPs regularly help with:

  • Acne and skin concerns
  • Sleep problems and screen-time habits
  • Mood, anxiety and stress (school, social or family-related)
  • Weight, nutrition and exercise
  • Sexual health and contraception discussions (handled sensitively and confidentially, in line with legal and ethical guidelines)

We aim to provide a safe space for young people to ask questions they may find hard to raise elsewhere.

Asthma, Allergies & Skin Conditions

Conditions like asthma, hayfever, food allergies and eczema can affect school, sport and sleep. At BayMed, we can:

  • Assess symptoms and triggers
  • Create or update asthma action plans and school documents
  • Suggest treatment options for allergies and eczema
  • Coordinate referrals to paediatric or allergy specialists when needed

We work with families to make plans that are realistic and understandable.

What to Expect at a Children’s Appointment

A typical children’s health visit at BayMed might include:

  1. History from parent and child
We ask what’s been happening, how long symptoms have been present, and any relevant background.
  2. Examination
Depending on the concern, this may include temperature, weight, breathing, ears, throat, chest, abdomen, skin and development checks.
  3. Discussion & plan
Your GP explains what they think is going on, what can be managed at home, when to come back, and when more urgent review is needed.
  4. Follow-up
We may arrange review appointments, immunisation visits, tests or referrals if appropriate.

For immunisation-only visits, the focus is on confirming which vaccines are due, administering them safely and explaining what to look for afterwards.

When to Book a Children & Immunisations Appointment

It may be time to book at BayMed if:

  • Your child is due or overdue for vaccines
  • You’re worried about a fever, cough, breathing, rash or persistent pain
  • Growth, feeding or sleep are causing concern
  • Teachers or carers have raised questions about behaviour, learning or attention
  • Your teenager is struggling with mood, stress, sleep or health habits

If you’re unsure whether your child needs to be seen urgently, our reception team can help arrange an appropriate appointment, and your GP can advise on what to watch for in the meantime.
